Three Nottinghamshire groups benefit in first round of 2004

The three organisations – Family First Limited based in Nottingham, Hope For The Homeless (HOPE) in Worksop and Nottingham’s Co-ordinating European Funding for the East Midlands Third Sector (CEFET) organisation - will share a total of £615,791 of lottery money. The grants are the first to be awarded to the county’s good causes in 2004 by the Community Fund. Five further rounds of Community Fund grants are expected throughout the year.

CEFET, based on Mansfield Road, has been awarded a grant of £267,000 for its Catalyst Programme. Although based in Nottingham, the Programme helps disadvantaged communities across the East Midlands access and manage European funding. By using this money, it is hoped they can regenerate themselves in terms of building social cohesion, social networks and community spirit.

A grant of £289,017 will enable Family First Nottingham, based on Alfred street North, to pay the salaries of six members of staff for three years and additional running costs. With these jobs secured, it means that the charity can develop its much-needed furniture and white goods service. The service involves the charity recycling donated items of furniture and white goods, such as fridges and washing machines, and giving them to people in need.

Hope For The Homeless’ grant of £59,774 will be used to extend the work of the organisation into the Harworth area. The money will be used to employ two people for three years to work with local homeless people and those who are at risk of becoming homeless.

Ian Holdsworth, Development Manager of HOPE, echoed the sentiments of all the grant recipients, saying, “HOPE was very pleased to hear of the support from the Community Fund, as were the residents and community groups we are liaising with in Harworth to ensure the project can go ahead successfully.

“Without he Community Fund’s support we would have had to delay the launch of the project to seek alternative funding and if none were available would have seriously had to review the financial viability of running the Harworth Project.”

The £615,791 worth of lottery money awarded to three Nottinghamshire organisations is from a total of £1,886,817 awarded to five counties in the East Midlands by the Community Fund. The money has been awarded as part of the Community Fund’s rolling grants programme in 2004.
