Derbyshire Delight

Four Derbyshire good causes have been thrown a lottery lifeline by the Community Fund in the second round of grants it has given to the region in 2004.

The Community Fund – a National Lottery distributor that gives lottery money to charities and voluntary groups – has awarded a total of £285,189 to the county.

The four groups to share in the lottery windfall are:

Tissington Village Hall Management Committee - £44,097
Chesterfield Law Centre - £155,822
Derby YMCA - £57,504
Derbyshire Rural Community Council, Wirksworth - £27,766

Explaining what the grant would mean to Derbyshire Rural Community Council Frances Ward, Rural Officer, said: “If our Community Fund grant application had not been successful the outreach service we offer would have had to be vastly reduced. Also the Living with Stress training would not have gone ahead.”

The grant given to Derbyshire Rural Community Council will be used to fund the Agricultural Chaplain two days a week for the next three years as well as general running costs for the outreach service, which has been running as a pilot.

Graham Hinds, the Agricultural Chaplain, provides an outreach service to rurally isolated farming families who are experiencing a range of material, emotional and financial concerns which lead to stress related problems. By ‘cold calling’ farms across west Derbyshire, Graham offers a listening ear and provides practical and emotional support were necessary. With lottery funding now in place, he hopes to provide the service to at least 100 farmers and run five Living with Stress courses across the west Derbyshire area.

Frances added: “We’re delighted to have received this grant from the Community Fund. The Agricultural Chaplain can now build on the excellent work he has already started across west Derbyshire to reduce levels of stress related problems caused by the impact of rapid changes to the farming industry.”

The grant given to Derbyshire Rural Community Council is from a total of £1,872,689 distributed amongst 19 groups, across six counties, in the East Midlands. The grants were awarded in March, making them the second round of grants the Community Fund has given to the East Midlands in 2004.
