Personnel and Administration

The success of the Charities Board has been based on the achievements of our staff. The role of Personnel and Administration is to provide leadership for staff and to effective service and advice across the organisation.

Our Personnel and Administration team is committed to achieving success through people by providing services, advice and support in a professional, approachable and open manner. We promote good practice, advice and quality and equality throughout the organisation.

Personnel

The Charities Board employs 431 permanent members of staff across 16 sites. Personnel is responsible for the broad range of personnel matters, including

  • personnel strategy
  • staffing
  • contract administration
  • payroll and pensions
  • employee relations
  • recruitment
  • employment law
  • policy and procedures
  • performance management.

We operate in a decentralised structure and give advice and guidance to managers and staff throughout the organisation.

Training and development

The Charities Board is committed to full staff training, development and succession planning. Our Training department offers a supportive and advisory role for the whole of the Charities Board. They provide corporate training on Board-wide issues, such as induction, equal opportunities, disability equality, recruitment and selection and performance appraisal. They also organise away-days for team-building exercises. We are currently devising a UK-wide leadership development programme for our managers.

Training also offers customised training to individuals on presentation and interview skills. When in-house training is not appropriate, they give the staff the opportunity to use external providers who work jointly with our training department to build courses. Training will also help members of staff research the most appropriate ways of meeting their training needs and will give advice on career development.

Office facilities

Our staff operate in 16 sites:

1 corporate office in central London

10 in England -9 regional offices and 1 at England headquarters

1 in Wales

3 in Scotland, including 1 dedicated to the west of Scotland

1 in Northern Ireland

All Charities Board sites are based in modern, refurbished offices which take into account disability access standards. (We are currently striving to make all our office suites fully accessible in line with the Disability Discrimination Act.) Our good quality, modern and comfortable offices provide a pleasant and safe working environment.

Central Office facilities provides a wide range of support to all offices through national and local contracts which are in line with Government procurement regulations. They also ensure we meet proper health and safety guidelines.

Enquiries

Our corporate enquiries service deals with over 20,000 enquiries a year. They respond to all written and telephone enquiries from potential and successful applicants and members of the general public. They deal with all recruitment enquiries, sending out and logging application packs. They administer the Board�s complaints scheme - we have an Independent Complaints Reviewer - and they provide secretarial support to the Board and its committees.

Equality Officer�s role and function

Her role is to:

  • Monitor and review the Charities Board�s equal opportunities policy and code of practice
  • Advise the Board of new legislation and external good practice
  • Provide regular progress updates and an annual equality report
  • Co-ordinate and service the Equality Advisory Group which advises senior Management Team on strategic elements of the equality policy
  • Liaise with our policy team on equality issues in grant-making and coding
  • Liaise with training team on the design of equality training initiatives
  • Co-ordinate and monitor the Board-wide Equality Action Planning initiative
  • Co-ordinate positive action schemes to improve the representation of disabled and minority ethnic staff at the Board: eg. Fast-track and Workable, disabled graduate placement Schemes; National Mentoring Consortium�s minority ethnic graduate mentoring programme
  • Point of contact for staff on discrimination and harassment complaints
  • Provide advice on disabled access issues.
