West Midlands strategic priorities

In Autumn 1998 the National Lottery Charities Board consulted with the voluntary sector both nationally and on a regional basis to develop a strategic plan for grant making across the region over the next three years. In developing the West Midlands strategy our aim is to identify those groups and communities at greatest disadvantage within the region, to highlight particular needs, and identify action to address these disadvantages and needs.

A number of priorities for future funding have been identified through analysis of the Boards grant making and the consultation process:

  • Geographical need - continue to focus on urban and rural areas showing highest levels of deprivation. We have identified rural Staffordshire and the following local authority areas Cannock Chase, Tamworth, Telford and Wrekin, Walsall, and Wolverhampton.

  • Black and minority ethnic communities - these communities have diverse needs with significant and ongoing experiences of disadvantage. Work is being undertaken with the Runnymede Trust to identify specific needs.

  • Young peoples projects - with the exception of Scout groups, very few projects concerned with young people have applied to the Board.

  • User led projects - user led groups allow people to find solutions to matters that affect their lives and communities

  • Small organisations - these groups work at a local level and often address the needs of minority or marginalised groups

  • Voluntary sector development - we would like to fund projects that help organisations work more effectively. This may include provision of advice, information, accommodation facilities.

To meet our funding priorities, staff at the WMRO aim to provide:

  • a help-line service Monday-Friday 9.00 am -1.00 pm
  • written feedback to unsuccessful applicants
  • targeted information sessions will be run in conjunction with umbrella and key contact organisations
  • work with other Lottery fund distributors to map allocation of funding and support the development of a community buildings strategy
  • work with the Home Office and The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions to develop a perspective on the needs of the voluntary sector.
