It’s Fun at the YMCA

Bargoed YMCA has received a birthday present of over £165,000 to renovate the popular centre following their 65th Anniversary. The Community Fund lottery award will provide a full time manager and help with renovations of the building so that activities to include more disability groups and older people with mobility problems can be developed.

The centre is split over 5 levels and the money will provide 2 lifts, modification to the doorways, a disabled toilet and a full-time manager. Over 200 people a week visit the centre, but with the proposed refurbishment and new activities on offer, its full potential can be maximised.

Joanne Price, Manager, is delighted at their success.
“We are thrilled that we can up date our building so that those with mobility problems can access events and activities that are otherwise not available to them. Older people groups have also expressed an interest in using the building when it’s been refurbished for luncheon clubs, tea dances and computer training. We were also aware that applications from this area were low and we would encourage other groups in the area to contact the Community Fund to see if their project could be something that would be appropriate for funding.”

Jeff Carroll, Community Fund Chair in Wales said
“The Wales Committee is delighted to support Bargoed YMCA as it is the biggest centre in Gilfach and this award allows them to move forward and make the building more accessible and develop more activities to include the wider community.”

Bargoed YMCA will shortly be appointing a full time manager who will oversee the refurbishment and ensure the smooth running of the organisation.
