You can be a beggar and be free. Also notice that a lot of rich people become slaves to their jobs and money. You can be rich and still be a slave. Freedom is a state of mind and choice to live your life on your own terms.

Happiness is an emotional state. Emotion felt is a response to focus and thoughts whether its a Mercedes or chocolate. Emotion is the same. That’s why many spiritual teaching like Zen teach awareness. By practicing awareness you begin to notice life and to appreciate it. And to appreciate, all you have to do is to shift your focus instead of complaining. This recession is a great way for people to learn to appreciate life more.
All of us have limbic systems to feel emotions, and all of us have approximately the same response curve. Emotional feelings are the same for everyone whether you are rich or not because in the end we are all human beings.

I spent the last few years studying happiness and I guarantee you that money alone cannot buy happiness. Ask yourself a question, “What is it that I truly want from life?” “What would I do if I had month to live?” These will guide you toward the answer. Some people find joy in being with their family. Others, find joy in running a business. Others find joy in serving others. And yet others find joy in discovering and inventing things.
Happiness is an emotional state. Feelings of love, satisfaction, peace, and abundance are all components of happiness. Happiness is basically a state in which you feel excited to be alive! Money is a medium of exchange. Nothing more or less. By itself money cannot bring one deep satisfaction. Satisfaction is brought by experiencing things in life that you want to experience. Money does not guarantee that. You can be rich and unhappy, and you can be happy and a beggar. But why not be both?

comparing the impact of a chocolate on rich and poor people does not tell you whether rich people savor little treats in life.
You would learn much more by asking people how often they really appreciate something special that they do for themselves. I guarantee rich people have more of the things we call “special” but to them, they just moved “special” up to the next rung on the ladder so its a Lamborghini instead of a fuckin piece of chocolate.

@audadvnc I’m actually not a materialist, and I haven’t come to any personal conclusion about whether or not money can buy happiness. All I’m saying is this particular study doesn’t convince me either way.

I understand the character limit can be debilitating when attempting to articulate a position. I would say that we can both agree that having no money is detrimental to happiness. Where our point of contention lies is having a lot of money. I would say that money can help to make you happy; however, all the money in the world will not bring a friend back to life. So there are other factors than can really prevent happiness even with all the money in the world. But it will not hurt…

I didn’t mean that i use poverty too, only meant to say… u counter my use of “money is paramount” part by saying by stating you didn’t say that & I know you did not imply that… but so many have use ‘poverty’ even when the study did not imply money is not important… both are extreme points but neither is absolute & if one can be use, so can the other.

I did not see you use the extreme of poverty at all. If you did I can’t find it in your comments. I do think it is important to take conclusions to their logical extremes it is a great way of testing ideas. That said it may be possible that too much money can cause unhappiness but I doubt it. I think people confuse the desire to protect wealth with unhappiness. Perhaps, the money makes the person happy and they want to hold onto it for that reason…
Money buys freedom. Unless you enjoy not being free, money is an important part of happiness.

of course money buys happiness. the amount of stress financial problems brings to low income families are disastrous both mentally and physically. fuck their chocolate savoring test, people got so much more shit to worry about. and no offence, Ana, but you are not exactly struggling financially so you are considered wealthy in many people’s eyes.
I think that study only proves that people get sad when you show them money and then take it away. I don’t think it makes a difference how much money you already have.

One point…. if you savor things it means you are living in the moment and being grateful for what you do have.
However, most wealthy people either went to school for a long ass time (meaning they think more so about the future), or they were moving and deal making to make money through old fashion business (meaning they weren’t satisfied and were always striving for more). These aren’t the type of people that sit around and savor chocolate, they are people who eat for fuel.
fuck those studies. it’s bullshit propaganda to make poor people feel better about their asshole of a situation. if you’re poor and struggling to make ends meet, money WOULD make you happier. it’s all about the alleviation of worry! i know it would lift me out of my situation and make ME a hell of a lot happier. fuck you guys.

Happiness is free to all people. Listen to fart sounds and you will giggle. If you buy a big boat will you giggle, or think about maintenance, gas prices, and docking fees?
@samuelantonio For the people in poorer countries and the less well off I think it is more about how do they meet their basic needs and level of comfort. Obviously because you use money in exchange for goods and services you need a certain amount of money to live comfortably. Once that status is met you think about other issues of personal comfort. To me the studies and the idea of money not buying happiness is more about excessive wealth like having more money than you know what to do with.

the argument and question is “Does money buy happiness?” Just becuase you live gloomville doesn’t mean that money can’t buy you happiness because it can. And if poor countries were soo happy being poor, why then would the ppl immigrate to a more advanced society and try to start new lives from scratch and to try and climb to the top of the social class ladder, if they were that happy being in a poor country? Apparently they must not be that happy or satisfied being poor.
The perfect solution would be, you are wealthy but you never jump into that wealthy lifestyle. What you do is stay middle class, but you don’t have to worry about paying bills none of that stuff. Meet with your middle class buddies, and just hang out and spend on stuff you life but not going overboard. Of course people would have to believe you aren’t wealthy so you’re going to have to keep that a secret because once the perception of wealth is there then that’s it.

They are not reporting because to do so would cause a panic. News flash…Hundreds of thousands of us are already panicked as we lose everything we have spent a lifetime working for!
