Awards for two Leicestershire groups in first round of 2004

The two organisations – British Korean Veterans Association, based in Leicester and Age Concern Hinckley and Burbage in Hinckley - will share a total of £146,127 of lottery money. The grants are the first to be awarded to the county’s good causes in 2004 by the Community Fund. Five further rounds of Community Fund grants are expected throughout the year.

The Leicester branch of the British Korean Veterans Association, based on John Bold Avenue in Stoney Stanton, has been given a £13,800 grant to ensure the group can continue to organise special trips for its members. Trips include social outings and to occasions such as Remembrance Day. The outings are extremely valued by the Association’s members, many of whom are elderly or disabled. This project was originally funded by the Community Fund in 2001 and the most recent grant will ensure that these outings continue for a further three years.

The Association was formed in 1982, in order to benefit men and women of all ranks who served in the Korean War 1950-53, and subsequent peacekeeping forces.

Age Concern Hickley and Burbage’s lottery grant of £132,327 will be used by the organisation to pay the salary of the full-time Project Manager for three years as well as contribute to the running costs of the organisation. Based on King Street in Hinckley, Age Concern promotes the well being of older people by helping to make life fulfilling and enjoyable. The charity does this by providing a range of activities and services for elderly people in eth area. Activities include information and advice, help with form filling, lunch clubs, exercise classes and IT training. The Community Fund grant means that these services and clubs can continue and be further developed for another three years.

James Bridges, Honorary Secretary of the British Korean Veterans Association, echoed the sentiments of both grant recipients, saying, “We are extremely pleased and highly privileged to receive the Community Fund grant. Without it we would have had to severely curtail our activities, resulting in our elderly members having a restricted social life.”

The £146,127 worth of lottery money awarded to the two Leicestershire organisations is from a total of £1,886,817 awarded to five counties in the East Midlands by the Community Fund. The money has been awarded as part of the Community Fund’s rolling grants programme in 2004.
