Lottery funds children's rights project

Save the Children Fund has secured funds from the National Lottery to help some of Scotland's most deprived youngsters become active players in their communities.

A grant of £114,000 from the Community Fund will employ youth workers in four areas, Upper Fort William, Ormlie (Thurso), Barrowfield (Edinburgh) and Camlachie (Glasgow), who will work with young people and make the links between the children's lives and public policy development.

The grant is one of 24 announced today by the Community Fund and worth a total of £3.5m. Other beneficiaries include people suffering from Alzheimers, people with physical and mental disabilities, and people living in poverty.

One part of Glasgow which has missed out significantly on lottery funding has been targeted through the fair share initiative and will see a Community Fund grant of £291,000 create a new neighbourhood centre in the heart of Whiteinch. This will provide a one-stop facility and focal point for the local community offering training, education, health and childcare facilities.

Chair of the Scotland Committee, Kay Hampton said,

" As always our grants are going where there is great need and where lottery funds really can make a difference. Communities from Shetland to Galashiels will all feel the benefit of lottery funding through the grants we are announcing today."

The Community Fund continues to be the biggest independent funder of voluntary sector and community activity in Scotland.
