Yorkshire & The Humber benefit from over £2.6 million pounds of National Lottery money


Twenty-three groups throughout Yorkshire and the Humber received a grant announced today by the Community Fund, one of the National Lottery distributors. In total, £2,669,185 has been awarded to voluntary and community groups in our region.

Since the Community Fund started in October 1995, 1737 grants totalling £177,766,590 of Lottery money has been awarded to voluntary groups in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Groups that received grants today include:

Region wide

The project will provide non-medical support for families across the region who have a child diagnosed with a life threatening or terminal illness.

The two-year will pay for staff and running costs.
Speaking from the group, the Development Manager, Jemma Chapple, said: “This is fantastic news and will enable Rainbow Trust to offer its unique care to more families in need. We look forward to expanding into this new area and working with key agencies.”

The Vice Chair of the Regional Awards Committee, Vas Patel said:
“The Community Fund is proud to be able to fund this project, which will give invaluable support to families in these difficult situations.”


In North Yorkshire: Hinderwell Village Hall – awarded £123,000

The grant will contribute towards the construction costs of a much needed, multi-purpose community sports centre for Hinderwell and the surrounding villages.

The project will be part-funded by the Sustainable Development Fund, North Yorkshire County Council, the Parish council, the Borough Council, and Sport England, Objective 2, and by the group themselves.

Speaking from the group, the Village Hall Secretary, Mrs Anthea Ellis said: “We are absolutely delighted and thanks to the Community Fund, we are one step nearer to building our desperately needed new community facility.”

The Vice Chair of the Regional Awards Committee, Vas Patel said:
“The Regional Committee is pleased to be able to contribute funding to this project, as the new Village Hall will offer this rural area excellent facilities for all members of the community, who are still suffering from the aftermath of Foot and Mouth and BSE.”


In South Yorkshire: Home-Start Sheffield – awarded £57,244

The three-year grant will enable the group to provide support to families living in the Lowedges, Batemoor and Jordanthorpe areas of Sheffield by employing a worker to train volunteers who will provide this support work.

Speaking from the group, the Manager, Karen Ritchie said: “We have been working with the local community on this project for about 6 months. Thanks to the Community Fund for making this dream come true, it will make a big difference to the lives of local people.”

The Vice Chair of the Regional Awards Committee, Vas Patel said:
“Good advice and support is crucial for families living on low incomes or benefits. Projects such this provide an invaluable support to vulnerable people.”


In East Yorkshire: The Community Development Company Ltd – awarded £178,457

The three-year grant will enable the group to expand an existing initiative, working with young people at risk from being excluded in Withernsea and the villages of South East Holderness.

Speaking from the group, one of the Senior Managers, Mrs Linda Tock said: “This is absolutely fantastic news, four years of commitment and hard work by young people to regenerate this traditionally rural area in their own way has paid off. This Community Fund grant shows a serious level of investment from established funders and ensures that young people in rural areas continue to have a voice.”

The Vice Chair of the Regional Awards Committee, Vas Patel said: “This project addresses the needs of people living in rural areas.
Young people are one of our local priorities and the Community Development Company Ltd offers them the opportunity to improve their self esteem, confidence and life skills.”


In West Yorkshire: SKIPPKO Arts Team - awarded £36,930

The Leeds based SKIPPKO Arts Team will receive a one-year grant which will part fund staff and running costs for their project, Snapshots – a place in time.

Other funding is coming from the arts@leeds celebrating Communities programme of regeneration through culture.

The group will run arts training and events for disadvantaged people living in the Burley and Hyde Park areas, which will culminate in a public exhibition of the work produced by local people.

Speaking from the group, the Arts Project Manager, Cath Brooke said: “The ‘Snapshots – a place in time’ project is all about people being creative together, sharing stories about their local community, learning new skills and gaining an understanding of each others view points. It will be a unique experience where groups will create artworks to be exhibited in an installation using a tent and a series of pathways linking all the work together.”

“The Community Fund exists to meet the needs of the most disadvantaged people. This is an excellent example of work which encourages people to come together across all communities, breaking down barriers of age, race, culture and faith by working together to provide a cultural forum for intercultural understanding and friendship.”


In Doncaster: Conisbrough & Denaby Drug Awareness Group – awarded £134,030

Five years ago, the people of Conisbrough and Denaby got together and set up this very successful community led group to address the needs of vulnerable young people in the area.

The three-year grant will build on the groups achievements, by contributing to the group’s go-karting project called ‘The Move’. Over 190 young people will be able to take part in a 12-week go-karting course, covering topics such as kart building, maintenance, IT skills, first aid and drugs awareness.

The project will be part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, Single Regeneration Budget, the Neighbour Support Fund, the Youth Service, and by the group themselves.

Speaking from the group, the Manager, Mr Tony Sellars said: “This is wonderful news for the community with the grant from the Community Fund (Lottery). The staff and volunteers of the MOVE PROJECT can reach out to help young people who are in a crisis situation.”

The Vice Chair of the Regional Awards Committee, Vas Patel said:
“Children and young people are one of our key priorities, this imaginative project will give valuable help to vulnerable young people in a very practical way.”


In Wakefield: D I A L Wakefield – awarded £59,698

The project will provide people with disabilities with advice on welfare benefits and disability rights, and will provide representation at tribunals.
The two-year grant will pay for a full time welfare rights worker.

Speaking from the group, Mrs Beverley Land said: “We are absolutely delighted with the award, as it will enable us to continue to deal with and develop our much needed welfare rights service for disabled people within the Wakefield district.”

The Vice Chair of the Regional Awards Committee, Vas Patel said: “The Regional Committee is pleased to be able to support this important work. Advice and information is often the first step to enabling people to gain the confidence to deal with the difficulties they face.”


In Kirklees: 1st Heckmondwike Scout Group – awarded £300,000

This one-year grant will enable this well-established local group to build a new scout hut, which will also serve as a community centre for Heckmondwike and the surrounding areas. The group are also contributing to the cost of the project.

Speaking from the group, the Group Council Chair, Mr Neil Foster, said: ”This is fantastic news for the children and people of Heckmondwike, with a beautiful new building it will make a tremendous difference increasing community spirit within our town and help to build new friendships across the area.”

The Vice Chair of the Regional Awards Committee, Vas Patel said: “The Community Fund is delighted to fund this project which will improve the quality of life of the people living in the area, allowing them to become more involved in the social activities.
