Research into Community Fund grant-making

We have commissioned a number of evaluation and research projects to look at the effectiveness of our grant-giving.

Village halls and community buildings
The Community Fund is the largest capital funder of community buildings, particularly in the countryside. On average seven per cent of all the money we give out each year supports village halls and community centres.

Exit strategies - factors for success
The Community Fund has always regarded it as important to ensure that projects have a long lasting impact on the lives of disadvantaged people. Accordingly we have always taken exit strategy into account in the scoring of grant applications.

What voluntary and community groups think about their impact on the natural environment
We commissioned a research study from Groundwork UK in early 2002 to find out whether considering a project’s impact on natural resources and the environment would put barriers in the way of groups helping the most disadvantaged.

Large grants for small groups
The Community Fund has always been willing to make comparatively large grants to small organisations. We followed the experiences of some groups that had received large grants from us, to gain valuable information about their perceptions and reactions.

Mapping grants to deprived communities
Until this study no-one had ever researched exactly where the voluntary sector gets its money from - the Lottery, local and national government, trusts, European Social Fund etc.

We have commissioned the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies at Newcastle University, which carried out the initial research, to produce a more in depth report - which we plan to make available to other funders to aid their grant making.

Refugees and asylum seekers in London: the impact of Community Fund grants
The London regional office of the Community Fund has made several grants to organisations providing a service for refugee communities.

Drug misuse and homelessness
Drug misuse and homelessness are two of the most significant social problems in the UK. In Scotland policies and funding to tackle these problems have been significant planks of the Scottish Executive's social justice and health strategies.

Voluntary sector infrastructure organisations: an evaluation of Community Fund grants
Grants to voluntary sector infrastructure organisations are a key element in our efforts to tackle disadvantage and improve the quality of life in communities. We believe that the services provided by 'infrastructure’ bodies enable voluntary and community organisations to work more efficiently and effectively, and so to have a greater impact on the lives of the people they help.
