Case StudiesUK | England | Scotland | Wales | Northern Ireland UK Case Studies In March the Mental Health Foundation launched a groundbreaking report based on a three-year investigation of the ways in which people with mental health problems manage their own mental health. The Mental Health Foundation received a grant of �542,000 from us in 1997 for a three-year programme. The report is the culmination of the project. Every year in the UK approximately 21 million adults get involving in volunteering. Some do a few hours a year, some a few hours each week � but whatever their contribution, each and everyone makes a difference to the quality of life in all our communities. England Case Studies Dial UK Dial UK is the umbrella organisation for a network of local advice centres for people with disabilities. Scotland Case Studies Our grant provided a park ranger for a local country park which is run by volunteers from the local community. The community want the warden to increase visitor numbers to the park and provide some economic benefit to the area.Kinneil Miners' Charitable Society The grant will pay for the society's building to be extended and refurbished. Disabled access will be improved and an administrator employed to manage a range of additional community activities.West Whitlawburn Community Development Committee Our grant built a community centre - aptly called the Bonus Ball Centre. This houses a caf� and a fitness suite as well as a range of meeting rooms and a function hall.Wales Case Studies Independent Community Transport The group provides door-to-door transport services for disabled and older people in Caerphilly who are unable to use public transport. The award will pay for a 33-seater, wheelchair accessible coach. The organisation will be able to carry bigger groups for longer journeys in greater comfort. Groups will be able to go on holiday, at reasonable cost, throughout the UK. Science play schemes during term time and in school holidays will bring science and technology alive for 5-11 year olds in Mumbles. Our grant will mean that more children can use the scheme by keeping prices low and places will also be set aside for children with special needs. The grant will pay for the group's running costs. The Library provides a mobile toy lending service providing exciting and well-designed play equipment and the sale of cheap craft materials. Their toys include those especially chosen as stimulating for children with a variety of special needs, and their services reach many isolated rural communities. Northern Ireland Case Studies Carntogher Community Association An exciting and innovative IT project to reduce emigration from this deprived rural area by setting up a multi-media training centre for adults. They are also developing the information sector in the area and encouraging local business opportunities. They hope to foster the skills needed for setting up multi-media and e-commerce businesses. The grant has paid for the renovation of a derelict building into a community facility which will include a playgroup, older people's club and teenage study centre. The centre, co-funded by the Department of the Environment and the International Fund for Ireland, will also include a tea room, retail units and tourist apartments. North East Case Studies North East Refugee Service This service is a response to the Government's policy of dispersing asylum seekers and refugees throughout the country. It works with local community groups to help those living in the North East to create a network of support agencies and to help them to get access to local services. North West Case Studies Hulme Community Computing Having access to and advice on Information Technology, education and training, can help people gain new skills and increase the opportunities available to them. This community drop-in centre improves access to these facilities for the people of Hulme, a deprived area of Manchester where many people from minority ethnic groups live. With the help of our grant the group will continue to run the service, improve their IT equipment and refurbished the centre. Weston Spirit Founded by Falklands War veteran, Simon Weston, the project encourages young people aged 16 to 18 from inner city areas to take an active role in their communities, helping them avoid unemployment, drug abuse and crime. The grant to run residential training courses for 120 young people in team building, personal development and community involvement. Yorkshire and the Humber Case Studies This Barnsley-based theatre company of adults with learning disabilities is using its grant to produce a play about the achievements of people with disabilities which will tour community venues. LATCH (Leeds Action To Create Homes) Housing associations and managers of temporary accommodation for young people are increasingly aware of the need to involve their clients in the re-housing process. Part of the Charities Board's support for the Chapeltown-based Leeds Action to Create Homes (LATCH) is for a project based on the national self-build movement model which provides young people with the design skills and construction training necessary to build their own homes. This Leeds based project provides community training in modern music production. Eastern Case Studies Ipswich Community Playbus The money paid for the replacement playbus, which visits deprived areas offering a range of activities for children along with advice and information for adults on welfare benefits and debt management. East Midlands Case Studies On the Broxtowe, Apsley and Bilborough estates of Nottingham, a third of all households are lone parents receiving benefit. On the streets and in the schools, Zone Youth Project targets those at risk of offending. Fore-Front! promotes educational work in association with local schools, colleges and the Greater Nottingham TEC. An associated arts project has led to enrolments for drama studies at the local college. The aim is to broaden horizons and help people to break out from the negative stereotyping of the area not least by funding agencies. We awarded the grant to support families experiencing difficulties. Parents took part in a varied educational programme, which included confidence building, health education, child development and literacy and numeracy courses. Families were encouraged to use the group's nursery more, and family outings and holiday activities are regularly organised. West Midlands Case Studies The 'foyer' approach adds a crucial dimension to support for the homeless by providing opportunities for education and training as well as accommodation. At St Edmond's Court a foyer in Birmingham run by the St Basil's charity, training is customised for specific jobs. Supervised work experience placements are available through local businesses. Residents are offered a comprehensive resettlement package to prepare them for independent living. The project provides support for people with mental illness. A wide range of people will benefit, including those suffering from eating disorders and mental illness caused by substance abuse. Services include a post-natal depression support network, an out-of-hours crisis service, counselling and a rural outreach project. London Case Studies Surrey Docks Farm Provident Society This group works with people with learning difficulties to help them get access to training and employment; particularly in horticulture. They have been successful in providing a unique, flexible and student-led training programme for adults with learning disabilities. School leavers with learning disabilities often need sensitive job training supervision in a constructive atmosphere. An atmosphere of positive endeavour and caring support prevails at the horticultural training garden centre of the Harington Scheme in Highgate. Most of the trainees have attended special schools. Many have made progress on City and Guilds courses and work placements. South East Case Studies Queen Elizabeth's Foundation for Disabled People A project to adapt an underused space at the existing resource centre for people with disabilities to form two large activity rooms and multi-gym room; and convert existing activity rooms for meeting and interview/counselling purposes. South West Case Studies Bristol Care and Repair provides a range of services for older people living at home. Activities such as quilting, dance, reminiscence and creative writing are funded by our grant, which gives older people the chance to make friends and support each other. Dressability provides information about clothing for people with disabilities through a database of retail and mail order outlets. The grant pays for a clothes alteration and dress making service. |
